My USB flash drive works fine on my Xbox, but not on my computer

When you format a USB flash drive to its maximum size for use on Xbox 360, your computer can’t read the Xbox 360 custom folder, nor can you see any files saved in that folder. This appears as a private folder named “Xbox 360” on the USB flash drive.

If I use a USB flash drive on my Xbox 360, will I get banned from Xbox Live?

No. In fact, we encourage you to use some form of external storage, such as a USB flash drive, for your game data.

How do I add more space on a USB flash drive I’ve formatted with a customized, small Xbox 360–only folder?

You’ll have to reformat the USB flash drive to make the folder larger, or format the drive to the maximum size of 2 TB. For more information about formatting your USB flash drive, see Using USB flash drives with Xbox 360.

My USB flash drive isn’t showing up at all

Have you configured your device yet?

  • This is the first time I’m using the USB flash drive Your USB flash drive might not be in the proper format. Plug it into your PC, open up “My computer,” right-click on the USB device, and select “Format.” Format the USB flash drive to FAT32. Make sure to save any files before doing this, as formatting will erase all data on the USB flash drive.
  • I’ve already configured it Try plugging in your USB flash drive after the console starts up and see if it appears. This is a very uncommon issue, but we’re aware of it and are working to correct the issue. For now, just remember to plug in your USB flash drive after startup.

My USB flash drive un-configured itself

If your USB flash drive suddenly has no data in it, or it has reverted to its pre-configured state, it may not meet all of the requirements for using it with the Xbox 360 console. If you got a warning message during configuration, find a USB flash drive that better meets the requirements for use with the console.

If you want to give your USB flash drive another try, format it to FAT32 again on the PC and then try the configuration process again. Make sure to save your files on the console as well, in case you still encounter a problem.

Why don’t I have a full 2 TB of storage space available on my USB drive?

The Xbox 360 reserves 512 MB of storage space for system use.

What other storage options do I have?

The Xbox 360 500 GB Hard Drive is the best option for media enthusiasts. You'll have 500 GB of space for games, HD TV and movies, Games on Demand, game demos and add-ons, music, and much more. Certain games still require a hard drive for system link play or Xbox Live multiplayer games. For multiplayer gaming, we recommend that you use a hard drive.

How to Get a New Xbox 360 Update

See these updating tips and steps

The Xbox 360 console software is updated periodically with new features. If you're having one of the following problems, updating your console software might fix it:

  • Dashboard themes don't appear.
  • Avatars are missing.
  • The Kinect sensor doesn't work (flashing green or red sensor light).

Note The version of the console software available here is from 11/17/2016.

The easiest way to update your console software is to connect to Xbox Live. To update your console by using Xbox Live, all you need is an Internet connection.

To connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet, see the Xbox 360 First-Time Connection Solution.

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. If prompted, select Wired Network or the name of your wireless network.
  4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.

If you haven't connected to Xbox Live in a while, your console software might need updating. If a game disc includes a newer version of the console software than you currently have, the game disc will prompt you to install the update when you start the game.

Note If you choose not to update your console software, you'll receive a prompt to update the next time you start the game. Some Kinect games require a console software update to work properly.

Copy to a USB flash drive

If you can't connect your Xbox 360 console to the Internet, you can copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive and then install it on the console.

Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system. For information about how to format a USB flash drive, see the “Format a USB flash drive” section of Using USB flash drives with Xbox 360.

  1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
  2. Download the update file.
  3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  4. Unzip the file. If you're using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive (for example, E:\). Do not copy the contents to another folder on the USB flash drive (for example, E:\Files).
  6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
  7. Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
  8. Restart the console.
  9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. When prompted, select Yes to update the new console software.

You can update your Xbox 360 console software by downloading the update to your computer from Xbox.com, burning the update to a CD or DVD, and then installing the update on your console. Here's how:

  1. On your computer, download the update file.
  2. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  3. Unzip the file.
    • If you're using Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
    • If you're using an earlier version of Windows, you need to use a special software program to unzip the file (for example, WinZip).
  4. Insert a blank, writeable CD or DVD into your computer.
  5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory on your CD or DVD, and then choose to write (burn) the files to the disc.
  6. Once you burn the files to disc, remove that disc from your computer and insert it into the disc drive on your Xbox 360 console.
  7. Restart the console.
  8. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. When prompted, select Yes to update the new console software.

Frequently asked questions

I get an error code when I try to update my console. What does it mean? If you see a specific error code or status code, use the search box on the Error & Status Code Search page to find information about how to solve the problem.

What does the update cost? Nothing. It's free.

How can I tell if my console software is up to date? Consoles connected to Xbox Live will have the latest console software. When you connect to Xbox Live, your console automatically prompts you to update your software if an update is available.

Do I have to install the update? No. However, if you want to play or communicate on Xbox Live, you must have the latest console software. New games might also require the update before you can play them. Also, Kinect games might not play properly if your console software is not up to date.

Can I go back to the old software version if I change my mind? No. An updated console will stay updated.

I can’t connect to Xbox Live. What should I do? If you can’t connect to Xbox Live, try using the Xbox 360 Connection Error Solution.

Notes

  • This Composite Audio/Visual cable does not support high definition (HD) display.
  • If you have a HDTV and want to check the instructions for using an HDMI cable, see Connect your Xbox 360 console to a TV.
  1. Connect the small 3.5mm connector to the 3.5mm jack on the back of the console.
  2. Locate the A/V ports on your TV or monitor. Connect the color-coded connectors on the composite A/V cable to the corresponding ports on the TV as follows:
    • Yellow = composite video

When you turn on the TV and console, you should see the Xbox Dashboard on your display:

Connect a wireless controller

  1. Turn on the console.
  2. Insert the AA batteries into the controller.
  3. Turn on your controller by pressing and holding the center Xbox Guide button, until the controller turns on.

If the controller does not turn on, check the batteries. If you’re using a rechargeable controller, make sure that it is charged.

  1. Press and release the connect button on the console.
  1. Within 20 seconds, press and release the connect button on the controller.

Notes

  • When the lights surrounding the power button on the console stop flashing, the controller is connected.
